A letter between relatives

In this issue, a private letter written between two close members of a family will be analyzed. This textual type is of fundamental importance when carrying out studies of the history of the language, due to the presence in it of phenomena that have no place in other typologies.

In this case, the biographical details about the author of the text are rather scarce, although some information of the letter itself (his occupation as a member of the clergy, references to books, or even the appearance of a fragment in Latin) requires thinking of a character that possesses a certain degree of instruction. However, this fact does not prevent the manuscript from reflecting some of the phenomena of Spanish pronunciation that occur at this time in the Central Valley of Costa Rica and that, even to this day, dialectically characterize this area of this Central American country.
