The pest and cholera

After nine years of war, a plague broke out in the Greek camp. The fortune teller Calchas predicted that the disease would not cease until Cryseis, a slave of Agamemnon, was returned to her father.

Agamemnon had no choice but to obey and surrender his plunder, but by not wanting to remain unrewarded he snatched from Achilles his slave Briseis. Achilles became so enraged that he retired from combat and asked his mother Thetis to convince Zeus to favor the Trojans in the war.
